Weather a Pip-Boy-Style Prop With Control
Use layered paint, high-contact wear, and restrained grime to give a retro-futuristic wrist prop more depth without hiding its design.
Weathering works best when it supports the shape of a prop instead of covering it. On a wrist-mounted device, casing edges, controls, strap mounts, and the screen surround naturally explain a little wear.
Begin with a clean base finish. Let the main colors, large panels, and readable controls do their job before you add age. If the design is not clear without weathering, extra grime will not solve the problem.
Choose a few high-contact areas and use a small sponge or dry brush to add subtle variation. Build dirt in thin passes, then remove most of it from broad flat surfaces with a soft cloth.
Stop often and check the result from a few feet away. A controlled weathered prop should still feel readable, durable, and comfortable to display or wear.
