Weather a Game Prop With Restraint

Add wear that supports a prop’s shape and story without covering the details that make the build readable.

Weathering looks most convincing when it follows how an object would be handled. Look for edges, grips, seams, feet, and corners that would naturally collect wear. Choose two or three areas that tell the story rather than covering every surface with the same effect.

Build the finish in light layers. Start with the clean base colors, then test a darker wash or dry-brushed edge on a spare piece. Step back after every layer; the prop should still read clearly from a few feet away.

Keep the strongest effects near parts that would actually rub, chip, or collect dust. A restrained finish is easier to adjust and lets your craftsmanship remain visible.
