Choose a Scale for a Portal-Inspired Prop
Use quick mockups and a clear use case to decide whether a lab prop should be desk-sized, shelf-sized, or wearable.

A prop can look enormous in a game reference and still work better as a compact physical object. Before you build, decide whether you want a desk piece, a shelf display, a photo prop, or something wearable.
Make a paper outline or simple cardboard block at the intended size. It will quickly show whether the form fits the surface where it will live and whether its most recognizable details remain visible from normal viewing distance.
For display pieces, prioritize silhouette and one hero detail. For a wearable or handled object, also consider grip, weight, doorways, storage, and comfort.
Use one familiar object for comparison: a chair, a notebook, a hand, or the shelf itself. This helps prevent a project from feeling accidentally too large or too small once it is complete.
The best scale is the one that makes the finished prop easy to see, enjoy, and keep in the real space you have.
