A useful collection catalog is one you will keep up to date. Begin with a small group: one shelf, one series, or one type of item. Record the name, a quick photo, its location, and any detail you would hate to forget later.
Use simple language that makes sense to you. A broad location such as office shelf two or storage bin B is often more useful than a complicated code system you will not remember.
For visible shelves, small labels can help visitors understand what they are seeing. Keep them secondary to the objects: a short title, game name, or date is often enough.
Review the catalog when you rearrange, move, or add a new item. A catalog should make the collection easier to enjoy, so remove fields if it begins to feel like paperwork.
